Description

We have registered the design for our newest product and are ready to share the Slow Grazer, by Doncaster plastics!

The Slow Grazer is designed for feeding forage outdoors. This design is to hold as much as a bale of hay and keep it dry whilst only allowing the horse to eat slowly rather than bolt the ration. This is particularly useful for horses with metabolic disorders, those with a history of laminitis, or those who are overweight. The inner hopper design means that all of the hay can be accessible to the horse, but at a restricted rate.

For those who are concerned about their horses’ breathing, the feeder feeds at a low level, which is more natural for the horse and healthier for the respiratory system as the sinuses can drain. The horse does not submerge their face into the hay itself as the horse’s nose remains outside the feeder. The Slow Grazer dispenses both wet and dry hay, as well as haylage.

Because the hay is accessed slowly, there is little wastage, making it more economical for you and meaning there isn’t as much waste hay to clear away or be trampled into the floor.

Our horse is an older cob, who had become a little dipped backed with age. The lower feeding position seems to also be encouraging a more healthy musculature outline, compared to a tiny hold restrictor net, as he is no longer yanking upwards at a high level.

The holes come as an elongated 60mm as standard, which has proved to be a good balance for steady eating without danger of a hoof being caught and without putting undue wear and tear on the teeth or neck. Holes can be made different sizes to order.

The Slow Grazer is held in place by the use of an internal water tank, which acts as ballast to prevent tipping or dragging. This has the advantage of needing no tools other than a hosepipe to install. When the Slow Grazer needs to be moved, the tank can be emptied, and the unit dragged by one person or lifted easily by two. The unit is supplied with a bung to empty, but there is the option for a tap that can be connected to a hose for those Slow Grazers destined to move position frequently. We can also make provision for the Slow Grazer to be ground anchored if you prefer.

The lid has been designed for one-handed operation, and the clip can be fitted with a padlock for those horses/ponies who have learned to open supposedly horse-proof catches!

To clean, the Slow Grazer has been designed for any remnants/dust to be simply brushed out of the base drain, or it can be hosed through, again using the base drain channels.
